Chiropractic Adjustments
Many describe an Adjustment as “cracking or popping your back” in order to help you feel better. An Adjustment is more accurately described as a gentle, hands-on way of improving how your back moves and feels. With no drugs or surgery involved, it’s no surprise that chiropractic care is growing in popularity for treating pain naturally. Benefits often include less pain, less stiffness, and better performance in your favorite hobbies & activities.
During your visit you can expect a chiropractor to assess your spine, deliver a few adjustments using their hands or a small tool, and recommend some things to do after to help you with your issue. Often times you’ll hear a “popping” sound during your visit and that is totally NORMAL! The sound is just some air from your joints releasing, similar to cracking your knuckles. After your visit you may feel some soreness that typically resolves quickly on it’s own. If needed, your chiropractor may recommend you do some stretching and apply some ice to the area to speed up results.
You may wonder, how do adjustments actually work? They work by improving joint movement, taking pressure off nerves, encouraging blood flow, and reducing inflammation. All of which trigger natural pain relief in those achy and stiff places. The following list will briefly describe how each of these can help your body feel better:
- Joints: Adjustments at the most basic level improve your range of motion which can aid in basic movements such as bending, lifting, and twisting.
- Nerves: Your nerves come from your spine so adjustments can relieve irritation and pressure on these which often feel like burning, tingling, and numbness when they are not healthy.
- Circulation: Improving movement and function in the spine naturally helps drive blood flow to areas that have been stiff and tight for any length of time.
- Inflammation: After an injury, things often become red, hot, & swollen. By getting things moving again we can help the inflammation go away quickly without the need for drugs and medications.
Common conditions that chiropractic care can help with are:
- Chronic low back or neck pain
- Headaches & migraines
- Joint pain (shoulders, hips, knees. etc.)
- Whiplash injuries
- Poor posture
- Sciatica
- Sports injuries
There are a number of benefits from getting adjusted but let’s highlight a few of the most common ones. Firstly, since it is working with your body naturally, there is no worry for unwanted side-effects that often happen from drugs or surgery. Secondly, with improvements in motion and flexibility, you can expect your favorite activities and overall lifestyle to become easier and more comfortable. Lastly, by addressing the issues at the source you can set yourself up for less problems in the future and support long-term wellness.
When done by a licensed professional, chiropractic care is one of the safest treatments available while still being very effective at relieving pain and improving function. The most common side-effect is mild soreness that is usually short-lived.
Tips for first time patients. When coming in for a visit it is helpful to wear comfortable clothes that allow the doctor to access your spine fairly easily (shorts, athletic wear, tank top’s loose fitting clothes.) If you have insurance or any helpful medical information such as X-ray’s, MRI’s, etc. bring these with you as they can help the provider understand your history better and ultimately increase your chances of getting great outcomes.
